Contact a few different cremation services to inquire about supplies, accessories, and discount prices. When meeting with a funeral home director, mortuary, or professional crematory, be clear about the total cost, and what exactly is included in the price tag. The funeral director should give you an itemized list of all charges. If you opt for a traditional burial, inquire about the types of coffin available, such as metal or wood. Whether you decide on cremation or traditional burial service, be sure to inquire about what is involved in the planning, such as monument, memorial, embalming, headstone, hearse, and cemetery arrangements. You need to decide whether you want a monument, vault or grave at the burial site. (You may want to purchase a special marker for a veteran.) When the deceased are brought to the funeral home after death, they first undergo embalming before any memorial services or wakes are held. Or, if the body is cremated, either onsite or at a crematory, the ashes are placed into an urn for display at a service. Bring along any pertinent information, such as the deceased’s name, date of birth, social security number, maiden name, occupation, siblings, photos for the newspaper obituary, and any personal effects. The funeral director should coordinate all church services with the church clergy if it is a traditional funeral, as well as the limousine and hearse to and from the funeral. Funeral homes usually perform all of the necessary paperwork, permits, cemetery arrangements, cremation services and obituaries for the newspapers. But be clear about this from the start, and get everything in writing. The crematory or importer should supply an urn for the ashes to be deposited. Before choosing a cremation company or business, make sure the professional will take care of all arrangements on your behalf.
